During the last months of 1969, the Pietro Beretta arms factory at Gardone Valtrompia (Italy), started producing a new 5.56mm (.223) military rifle called the Beretta Model 70 ∕ .223 AR (Assault Rifle).

Production of two other versions, one SC (Short Carbine) with a folding stock and one LM (Light Machine gun) with a heavy barrel, is also expected.

The Pietro Beretta company is the largest Italian manufacturer of small arms, producing both sporting and military types, and recently converted large quantities of U.S. M1 (Garand) rifles into the BM-59 caliber 7.62mm NATO rifles adopted by Italian armed forces.

The Beretta Model 70/.223 has a body of heavy-gauge stampings (sheet steel 1.25mm thick) which strongly resembles, in both appearance and construction, that of the Swiss SIG 530-1 in .223.

Other than this, the two rifles have nothing in common from a mechanical point of view.

In fact, the SIG 530-1 was conceived as a delayed blowback weapon and only later was a gas piston added.

The locking mechanism was converted from delayed blowback with rollers to a positive locked breech system by means of a locking bar placed between the rollers and operated by the gas piston.

On the other hand, the Beretta Model 70/.223 was originally designed as a gas operated weapon with a rotating bolt that carries two front locking lugs like the U.S. M1 rifle.

Unlike the U.S. M16 rifles and the Belgian CAL in .223, the locking lugs of the Beretta do not close into a barrel extension but instead on a reinforcing sleeve welded to the receiver.

This means that the bolt is of heavier construction and the weight of the gun is in comparison slightly increased.

Starting with the gun loaded and cocked, the Beretta functions as follows.

As the trigger is pressed, the hammer falls to strike the firing pin and ignites the cartridge.

As the bullet passes the gas port in the upper side of the barrel at about 328 mm from the breech, gas flows into the cylinder and impinges against the piston and operating rod.

Thus, they are driven to the rear and the recoil spring mounted around the operating rod is compressed.

The piston and operating rod travel rearward in their tube on top of barrel and in doing so, they push the bolt carrier to the rear.

After about 9mm of free backward travel, during which the bullet leaves the barrel and the pressure drops to safe limits, a cam in the bolt carrier rotates the bolt 30 degrees and unlocks the action.

The bolt carrier and the bolt now travel together to the rear. After about 27 mm of backward travel the piston clears two exhaust ports in the cylinder walls: the gas pressure inside the cylinder drops to zero and the recoling parts continue their motion to the rear.

The velocity acquired during the iniatial stages being sufficient to carry them through the cycle.

When the change lever is set for full auto fire, the gun has a cyclic rate of fire of only about 630 rounds per minute.

There are two factors involved to give such a performance:

a)  the long overall travel of the recoiling parts which move about 125 mm;

b) the weight of the recoiling parts which are quite heavy, having a mass ratio of about 4:1. This means that the primary mass including the piston, operating rod and bolt carrier has a weight about four times greater than that of the secondary mass including the bolt firing pin and extractor. As is generally known, a heavy primary mass is very important in order to give both smooth unlocking of the bolt and positive forward movement of the action even in case of a dirty gun and / or ammunition.

It should be mentioned at this point that the Model 70 does not have a gas regulation system.

The Beretta has a trigger mechanism similar, to a degree, to that of the U.S. M16 rifle and other successful assault rifles: when the fire selector lever is set for single shot fire, a pull on trigger draws a sear attached to the trigger down out of engagement with the hammer notch placed under the hammer axis.

This is the firing notch. There is also a safety sear which in single shot fire, enters another notch on the back of the hammer blocking it until the bolt is fully forward. In addition, there is a bolt carrier actuated disconnector which prevents the falling of the hammer unless the bolt and bolt carrier are completely home. When the lever is set for full auto fire, this disconnector performs another function.

The sear for single-shot fire, is out of engagement due to the position of the lever. The disconnector, when struck by the bolt carrier, trips a second sear so that the hammer may strike in a full auto fashion.

Shooting .223 ball ammunition, the Beretta was found to perform without malfunctions for over 500 rounds and accuracy was remarkable. At 100 meters five shot groups of 1 1/2" to 2" were common from a good rest. Shooting short bursts of 2-3 shots, groups of 3-4 inches were easily obtained at the same distance, again from a rest. Full auto fire was found very easily controlable and muzzle climb was negligible.

In shooting bursts of 4 to 5 shots, the climb was slightly disturbing. The Beretta has a flash suppressor but does not seem to need a muzzle compensator at all.

Sturdy, compact and reliable are the best three words to describe this new gun. The only fault that may be found however is the fact that the cocking handle is the only connection between the bolt carrier and the operating rod. In the event this part is lost or damaged, the gun becomes unserviceable.

The new Beretta features a plastic stock and handguard, 30 round magazine and a weight of 7 Ibs., 8 oz.

Folding stock can be attached easily and the gun also comes in a LMG form (right) that features heavier barrel, carrying handle and a folding bipod.

High speed cameras [2] record firing reactions and the mechanism in testing.

The gas cylinder has a special lever which, in closed position, rests on the flash suppressor and the grenade launcher to prevent fìring the grenade.

In the up position, it closes the spindle valve allowing the gases to propel the grenade.

All versions of the gun can be fitted with a bayonet resembling the M1 carbine type.

When launching grenades, the special sight is raised exposing three different apertures for a choice of three possible distances: 50, 75 and 100 meters. The rear peep and the front sight blade are well protected from damage.

  1. Porta otturatore

2. Otturatore rotante.

3. Avviso di arma scarica.

4. Leva per il tiro automatico.

5. Selettore.

A scope is available for the Model 70/.223 that can be easily mounted and dismounted without the need of sighting-in the weapon each time. Mounts appear to be quite sturdy. Scope caps swivel to the sides to prevent loss and allow scope to be covered immediately.

[1] The last name of that gentleman was not Moretti, but Mazzetti, better known among his colleagues with the shortname of "Masa". He joined the firm at an early age, as an unskilled worker, and step by step he was able to rise himself and cover roles of higher that required the highest technical skills and responsibility at the R&D office. As he played a major role in the development of guns such as the BM59, the AR70, or the A300.

[2] The high speed camera on the left of the picture this time was actually under a protective cover, and not in use. But it was a real asset during the development of automatic guns. For example, this tool told how to make reliable the feeding system of the BM59. The magazine seldom did not feed the chamber. The high speed pictures made clear that the floor plate of the magazine had  a tilting movement while firing the gun in the full auto mode: when the head of the cartridge was in a lower position, the bolt was not able to push and move it from the magazine to the chamber. A different, inverted U-shaped , floor plate, avoided the tilting movement and  solved  the problem.
